- Overall, private health insurance paid 36% of total personal health care expenditures in 2006, the federal government 35%, state and local governments 10%, and out-of-pocket payments 15%
- An estimated 44 million people or 17% of Americans under 65 years of age did not have health insurance coverage at the time they were interviewed in 2006
- In 2005, the United States devoted 15% of its GDP to health compared with 12% in Switzerland, the country with the next highest share
- Expenditures for hospital care accounted for 31% of all national health expenditures in 2006. Physician and clinical services accounted for 21% of the total in 2006, prescription drugs for 10%, and nursing home care for 6%
